Human is the Race, Woman is an Experience

Rebirth of a Nation

iam mai © November 4, 2008 DG

I never thought that I
Would live to see the day
Not based on the turbulent road
We were forced to face
More than 500 years
On this continent
Well within these United States

I never thought that I
Would live to see the day
That a “Black” man
Would raise a nation
To carry the whole world
Into change
And the dream of a King
Would finally be claimed

Hasn’t it been 40 years or more
Since we changed Civil Rights laws
And since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
Has been called home
To meet our Lord
And over 100 years since Booker T.
Was invited beyond the gates
To well within the White House walls
And Sojourner Truth
Some 50 years before
Stated in a political assembly
“Ain’t I a Woman?”
In her bid for equality...

Often, with my writing of poems, children’s stories, tween novels, program ideas or lyrics, words come through me at inappropriate and inopportune times. Mostly, I’m driving or just about to sleep or in the middle of a dream when my thoughts are flooded with complete compositions. Neither of the above options are ideal. More often than not, I opt to keep driving, or trying to fall asleep (since I get so little of it), or dreaming in hopes that I will be able to remember my every thought. Again, far too often the muse does not return and I am left to learn my lesson. I am however, grateful for what does present itself to me and stay with me until I can capture the essence of it on paper, canvas or recording. On this site, you will be the witness to the renderings and writings that I have selected to share.

Introducing Medina iam mai © 03 DG

The competition is on…but is it worth all the drama to be on top? Medina is in her final weeks of her grade 8 year. She is determined to be the queen of the eighth grade. Medina has spent her first few years at Ford Jr. High School as a quiet high achiever, but this year something is different. This year she has discovered that her voice matters and her goals reach further than herself. Now the phrase, “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”, has new meaning to her.

Explore a day in the life of Medina by eaves-dropping on her inner most thoughts and meeting her friends.

Fourteen-chapter teen fiction about Medina's metamorphosis from a shy introvert into an expressive leader. This story is one day in the life of Medina. It speaks to the emotional, social and academic growth that occurs in students when facilitated by exceptional teachers and supported by strong role models in the home.

Are You Family? iam mai © 05 DG

“Little Xavion had been asking the same question for two whole days. His mother answered him the way she had each and every time he had asked. “Not yet Xavi, but soon your cousins will be here to celebrate your special day.”

This story is based on a little boy’s discovery of his extended family. The story is narrated through the little boy’s voice. He is beginning to understand that the members of his family may not necessarily look like his mother, father, sister or him, but they are, nonetheless, his family.

This story speaks to the innocence of childhood and the discoveries that we make along the way. Xavion’s family is comprised of people of different ethnic backgrounds. His parents are both bi-racial from different ethic groups. Xavion is used to seeing them and himself and does not notice the difference in them. However, when family members from both sides of his parents’ family come to celebrate his birthday, he questions, “Are you fably?”

What Is Wrong With My Doggis? iam mai © 06 DG

“When the beww wings at the front door, she scampers to the back. Here doggis, doggis, I call. Come to me. She yawns and continues watching TV.”

What is Wrong With My Doggis, is a poetic children’s story based on new discoveries between a little boy and his new puppy. The story is narrated through the little boy’s voice. He has not yet mastered pronouncing the letter “l” and replaces it with the letter “w” thereby speaking with a lisp. This little boy learns that all “doggis” are not the same but deserve our love nontheless. It is a playful story that can be a tongue twister and a great learning tool for young readers.

When The Rain Fell iam mai © 06 DG

Melodies in the heart and mind are reborn even when the rain falls. We lived on an island in the Caribbean called Trinidad. Every day was a beautiful day filled with warmth and sunshine and laughter. On the days when the rain fell I still remember the fun we had. The rain would introduce itself with a pitter, patter and a spit, splat, sputter, sputter. We would greet it with gleeful smiles, a shriek, and uncontrollable laughter. Joy and anticipation precipitate the changing skies for this young girl and her baby brother.

When the Rain Fell, is a poetic children’s story based on the fond memories of my childhood with my younger brother, in Trinidad. Discoveries of nature are made when the sunshine recedes and the rain takes centre stage.
